Celebrate! Happy New Year 2013

happy new yearHappy 2013! Time start those new year resolutions. If you are like many families, your kids are up early anyway so you might as well get started (or maybe they never went to bed). To jump start your list, we’re sharing a list of New Year’s health resolutions we’ve come up for our own families over the years.

1- I will make sure my child is up to date on her vaccines, including the yearly flu vaccine (there’s still time).

2- I will start to sleep train (if older than 6 months old).

3- I resolve to wean the bottle if my baby is older than one year.

4- I will read aloud to my child every day, even after he is old enough to read to himself.

5- I resolve to go through the medicine closet, dispose of out-of-date medications, and renew important rescue-type medicines such as epi-pens and albuterol.

6- I resolve to check to see that my child’s bike helmet still fits (consider putting name and contact telephone number on outside…just in case something were to happen) and tuck emergency phone numbers into her backpack.

7- I will start to read my child’s facebook page and phone texts. I’ll look for signs of bullying and signs of mental distress from my child’s friends as well as from my child. I will take action to address any problems.

8- I will remember to praise my child for acts of kindness and for working hard on school assignments.

9- I’ll get to know my kid’s friends and their families. I will start by getting out of the car to say hello when I drop my kid off at someone’s house.

10- I plan to encourage more self-sufficiency in my child. I’ll stop doing household tasks for my child when he shirks his duties.

I will turn off my cell phone while I am doing an activity with my child.

I will listen carefully to my child’s own New Year’s Resolutions.

Have a wonderful, healthy 2013,

Drs. Kardos and Lai

Considering that tens of thousands of this year’s flu vaccine were recalled, I am actually very thankful my child did not get it, nor am I planning to have her get it. Instead I will keep her healthy with good food, nursing, vitamins, and exercise.

We agree with you that eating healthy foods, breastfeeding, and exercising will help prevent disease. Remember, however, that in the time before vaccines, all children were breastfed, no junk/processed foods were sold, kids played outside instead of watching TV, and yet kids died in large numbers from polio, measles, and bacterial meningitis.

Your statement about flu vaccine recalls is misleading.  Specific car seat brands have been recalled in the past, but that should not stop parents from using approved car seats for their children to prevent death from car accidents. In the USA, no recalls have been issued for the 2012-2013 Influenza vaccine. Europe had a few recalls; for example, Novartis recalled 2 batches of flu released in Germany as a precaution. Importantly, no actual health problems from the vaccine were reported. Hundreds of thousands of flu vaccine doses have been given safely to prevent a disease that can kill. We urge our families to prevent death from flu and other vaccine preventable diseases by immunizing their children promptly.

I am sure you can achieve all these. All you need is enough dedication. I, myself plan to spend more time with my family, especially with the kids.

Hi, The flu shot is not nearly effective enough. There is still a good chance you will get the flu…even if it is milder case. I dont agree with vaccination for such a evolving virus. One day the flu is going to mutate into something unheard of from over vaccination. and we will be sorry. Washing hands, avoiding direct contact with those coughing etc are better ways to avoid the flu…educate about safety…not injecting chemicals into our bodies every year. Flu shots shud also be tracked so repeat vaccinations are not given Just dobt understand why western medcine is so paranoid….SUE RN! …I am more holistic ajd believe more in natural remedies..pharmaceuticals are a HUGE $ maker n thus why they are promoted.
